SewingClubs

What actually goes on at a sewing club? Is it all about devouring countless varieties of cake, chatting away, and sewing nonstop? Family members are usually shooed out of the house while the sewing circle is in session, making these gatherings something of a mystery to outsiders. What really happens behind closed doors? What role do sewing clubs play? What kinds of crafts are created? What do people talk about?

Sewing clubs is part of the exhibition series Visit at the Museum of Design and Applied Art. Visitors are invited to become a “fly on the wall” and catch a glimpse into the world of sewing clubs. The museum’s collection is viewed in a new light by placing handicrafts and sewing circles in the context of Icelandic design history and the home.

The exhibition opens as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Garðabær.
